Professor Naila Kabeer is professor Emeritus at the Department of International Development and on the Faculty of the International Inequalities Institute at London School of Economics where she is directing its programme on Gender Justice and the Wellbeing Economy.
From the Institute of Development Studies in Sussex to the Bosch Academy in Berlin, Professor Kabeer has consistently bridged the realms of academia and practice, shaping the field of social economics through her pioneering research at the intersections of poverty, social protection, labour markets and gender, as well as her dedication to integrating gender-responsive frameworks and methodologies in policy and planning.
Her advisory work with governments, multilateral and bilateral agencies, and leading NGOs - including Oxfam, ActionAid, BRAC, and PRADAN - have had significant effects on the translation of academic insight into transformative and inclusive, evidence-based policy and practice. Her collaborations with international agencies such as UNDP, the World Bank, and UN Women, as well as her continued service on the boards of the ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ-IIGH and the United Nations Research on Social Development, further reflect her leadership in galvanising global political commitment and aligning diverse stakeholders in pursuit of common goals.
Her most recent projects were supported by ERSC-DIFD Funded Research on Poverty Alleviation: Gender and Labour Market dynamics in Bangladesh and West Bengal. She is on the editorial boards of Feminist Economics and Gender and Development and on the international advisory board of the Canadian Journal of Development Studies. She is also a member of the Inequalities Advisory Group, and Bosch Foundation.
In 2025, Professor Kabeer was appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General to the High-Level Expert Group on Beyond Gross Domestic Product, honoring her enduring commitment to advancing social justice and gender equity in development policy, particularly in South and Southeast Asia.
