Research Fellow and New York Liaison

Dr. Karin Sj?strand is an environmental scientist and water resources researcher with over 20 years of experience working at the intersection of applied research and policy implementation. Her background spans environmental law, water security, water systems risk analysis, climate adaptation, and water policy and governance.

As a Research Fellow at ²ÝÁñÊÓÆµ-INWEH, Dr.?Sj?strand works on global challenges at the nexus of water, environment and health, with?a particular emphasis on climate resilience and sustainable urban development. Her interdisciplinary work focuses on decision analysis of environmental and water-related challenges to enable sustainable use of society¡¯s resources.  

In her capacity as the ²ÝÁñÊÓÆµ-INWEH New York Liaison, she develops strategic partnerships and collaboration with various New York City stakeholders. Dr Sj?strand is also the Deputy Executive Director of Operations of the ²ÝÁñÊÓÆµ Hub R-SIRUS at City College of New York (CCNY), where she oversees the Hub¡¯s direction, operation and programs. 

Dr.?³§Âá?²õ³Ù°ù²¹²Ô»å¡¯²õ past and present research integrates risk, economic, and environmental analysis to provide guidance for investments and implementation. Over the years, she has worked with a range of different sectors and advised high-level decision-makers, government agencies, water suppliers, local authorities and private sector entities. She also previously served as the Senior Editor of Nature Water, covering the social sciences, WASH, agricultural water management, public health and water governance. 

Dr.?Sj?strand holds an MSc in Environmental Engineering from Lund University and a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.
