DESCRIPTION

Professor Rosman is a leading figure in artificial intelligence and robotics. He is a Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and the Director of the Wits Machine Intelligence & Neural Discovery Institute (MIND). Wits MIND is a center for cutting-edge AI research with a strong focus on capacity-building across Africa and ensuring that AI technologies are developed ethically, inclusively, and in ways that serve the public good.

In addition to his role at Wits MIND, Professor Rosman directs the Robotics, Autonomous Intelligence, and Learning (RAIL) Laboratory and is a co-founder of Lelapa AI, a company committed to building AI solutions for Africa, by Africans. He also co-founded the Deep Learning Indaba, a movement that strengthens machine learning and AI in Africa, now reaching 47 African countries through its growing network of satellite events.

Professor Rosman¡¯s contributions to the field have earned him international recognition. He was named a 2024 National Geographic Explorer and a 2022 CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar. His research excellence has also been acknowledged through awards such as the 2021 Google Africa Research Award and the 2017 Google Faculty Research Award.
